I am a geographer specializing in geoinformatics to study environmental change in terrestrial ecosystems. I am employed as a researcher at the Center for Environmental and Climate Science of Lund University in Sweden, and I am presently a visiting researcher at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management of Copenhagen University in Denmark.
I have a PhD in Physical Geography from Lund University in Sweden, and an MSc in Geospatial Technologies from the University of Münster in Germany and the New University of Lisbon in Portugal. I received my BSc in Geoscience from Montclair State University in New Jersey, USA. Further details can be found in my CV. Since 1999 I've worked within various sectors including private, government, and academia in eight countries spanning three continents.
In general, my research interests include land system science and biodiversity conservation with particular focus on climate impacts, land degradation, and species distribution mapping and monitoring. I use a variety of tools centered around geoinformatics, including data from Earth-observing satellites, remote sensing methods, and statistical modeling, to understand human impacts on the terrestrial biosphere.
I’m currently funded by the Swedish Research Council’s International Postdoc Grant. The objective of my research project is to investigate the role of intra- and inter-seasonal drought on carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake in drylands, particularly savannas, using a multi-scalar and multi-temporal Earth observation-based framework. Drylands have large impact on the global climate system and this project will improve our understanding about the processes that govern current trends and inter-annual variability in terrestrial CO2 uptake over these ecosystems.
I’ve been an avid birder since the age of 14. As such, I’m interested in the migration and conservation of Afro-Palearctic migrant bird species, which includes mapping their movements and monitoring the quality of their breeding, staging and wintering habitats. Regarding conservation, I have strong interest in understanding the ecology and migration of birds of the Horn of Africa, particularly the Somali regions, and the conservation of their habitats.
