Ön is located in the Limhamn-Bunkeflo district in southwestern Malmö. There isn’t a bridge but a short road that connects Ön and Limhamn, so technically the island (Ön) is a peninsula :-) Back in the days when lime was mined for cement production in Limhamn's lime quarry, the area that is today Ön was used for dumping slag products, thus laying the foundation for a new artificial island. During the first half of the twentieth century, various industrial activities were carried out here. The northern part of the island began to be built up in the early 1990s with apartment buildings and that area is known for sport fishing with many recreational fisherfolk regularly present there.
Because of its strategic location that directly faces the Öresund strait, Ön is a wonderful location for watching bird migration both in the spring and in the autumn. Golden Plover / Ljungpipare, Razorbill /Tordmule, Common Scoter / Sjöorre, Eurasian Oystercatcher / Strandskata, Northern Gannet/ Havssula, and Common Guillemot / Sillgrissla have al be recorded here on passage. Sometimes though, a real rarity shows up such as a Black-browed Albatross /Svartbrynad albatross, so it is good to keep an eye out at this location.
