Klagshamns Udde

Klagshamn is my favorite place in Malmö. It is a peninsula that contains several different types of habitats such as woodland, scrub and thickets, mudflats, marshland, open fields, and flowery meadows. It is this diversity of habitat that makes Klagshamn so attractive for birds - nearly 200 different species have been recorded here. Other urban wildlife can also be spotted here like the Red Fox / Rödräv , Roe Deer / Rådjur and Wild Boar / Vildsvin, as well as a wide diversity of insects including the rare Lesser Emperor Dragonfly / Mindre Kejsartrollslända. It is also home to Sweden’s acutely endangered Green Toad / Grönfläckig padda that’s on the national red list. Klagshamn was designated a nature reserve in 2019.

Lindängelund

The history of this green recreational area in the southern parts of Malmö dates back to the year 2000 when Malmö residents planted a thousand trees on a former agricultural area to commemorate the new millennium. Bunkeflostrand

Between Klagshamn and the Öresund bridge is Bunkeflostrand strand. This area comprises coastal meadows (ängar) that have been used as grazing land since the bronze age and are thus culturally significant. A type of cattle that’s a mix between Aberdeen Angus and Highland Cattle are released in the fields during the summer in order to keep the meadows open and prevent overgrowth. The area also has some wooded parts, which adds to the diversity of habitats. Due to its importance for breeding and migrating birdlife and its cultural significance, Bunkeflostrand was designated a nature reserve back in 2007 as Malmö’s first nature reserve.

Ön

Ön is located in the Limhamn-Bunkeflo district in southwestern Malmö. There isn’t a bridge but a short road that connects Ön and Limhamn, so technically the island (Ön) is a peninsula :-) Back in the days when lime was mined for cement production in Limhamn's lime quarry, the area that is today Ön was used for dumping slag products, thus laying the foundation for a new artificial island. During the first half of the twentieth century, various industrial activities were carried out here. The northern part of the island began to be built up in the early 1990s with apartment buildings and that area is known for sport fishing with many recreational fisherfolk regularly present there.

Because of its strategic location that directly faces the Öresund strait, Ön is a wonderful location for watching bird migration both in the spring and in the autumn. In the spring, the area is great for watching Common Eiders / Ejder on passage. Golden Plover / Ljungpipare, Razorbill /Tordmule, Common Scoter / Sjöorre, Eurasian Oystercatcher / Strandskata, Northern Gannet/ Havssula, and Common Guillemot / Sillgrissla have all been recorded here on passage. Sometimes though, a real rarity shows up such as a Black-browed Albatross /Svartbrynad albatross, so it is good to keep an eye out at this location.
